One of the most common questions we hear at Vibrant Soul Pilates is, “Which is better – mat vs reformer Pilates?”
The answer: You don’t have to choose.
At Vibrant Soul Pilates & Wellness, we believe in balance ~ not just in your body, but in your approach to movement.
Each method offers its own unique benefits, and when practiced together, they create a well-rounded foundation for strength, stability, and mobility that can transform the way you move ~ both on and off the mat.
Mat Pilates is practiced on the floor using your own bodyweight, breath, and core engagement as resistance. Props like rings, bands, and blocks may be used, but the emphasis is on controlled, mindful movement without the assistance of a machine. It challenges your stability, endurance, and alignment in every position.
Reformer Pilates, on the other hand, uses a spring-based machine called the reformer to provide resistance and support. The added tension (and guidance from the machine’s straps and carriage) helps you move through a wider range of motion with more control and feedback, especially for deeper core engagement and muscle lengthening.
Mat and reformer Pilates are not either-or options. They’re complementary tools that build on each other.
Mat work will continue to increase your strength through advancing bodyweight movements, while reformer work helps refine, support, and also advance your practice.
